The Ioniq 5 is Hyundai’s first battery electric vehicle based on its Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) that features a flat battery, allowing the South Korean automaker to maximize interior space.

One intriguing aspect of the 5’s interior that is previewed in these teasers is the innovative center console. Hyundai dubs the console the ‘Universal Island’ and notes that it can slide back and forth. In addition, the driver and front passengers seats are equipped with leg rests that allow passengers to relax while their vehicle is being recharged.

Speaking of the seats, they are clad in eco-processed leather that is dyed and treated with plant oil extractions from flaxseed. Other areas of the interior include elements finished in textiles derived from sustainable fibers including sugar cane bio components, wool and poly yarns, and fabrics made from recycled PET plastic bottles. In addition, surfaces including the dashboard, switches, steering wheel, and door panels have a polyurethane bio paint coating featuring oil from rape flowers and corn.

“IONIQ 5 is a statement of design that offers an optimistic look at what customers can expect in the new EV era,” senior vice president and head of Hyundai Global Design Center, SangYup Lee, said. “The long wheelbase is translated to a new dimension of space. We designed this special space as a perfect place to recharge, your home away from home.”

Technical specifications leaked by Hyundai Austria in late 2020 suggest the Ioniq 5 will have two electric motors, all-wheel drive, and pump out 309 hp (313 PS). The crossover should be able to hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in 5.2 seconds and travel for approximately 280 miles (450 km) on the WLTP cycle.
